Gov's Wife Commends Onna Women for Preservation of Cultural Heritage



The warm atmosphere of Onna Sports stadium yesterday September 6, 2016 went agog with pomp and celebration as Onna daughters far and near gathered to mark the 2016 edition of the Onna women's day. Among the attendees was the wife of the Akwa Ibom state governor, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel.
Speaking, Mrs. Emmanuel congratulated the women of Onna for making the celebration worthwhile over the years, saying the cultural displays as well as the content of the event has demonstrated the style and strong commitment to the preservation of Onna heritage.

The First Lady commended the the supreme council of Onna women and paid special tribute to the initiator of the event, Akwa Obongawan Patience Udo Ukpa for her foresight in initiating the event which she said has effectively mobilized women under one umbrella of love, unity and progress. She charged the women to remain united and support each other, as this is the prerequisite for development.
The governor's wife in her altruistic manner used the occasion to empower a cross section of women from the 42 villages of Onna with cash gifts for businesses , with a charge for them to multiply the seed sown.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Glory Edet in her goodwill message extolled the virtues of the Onna women, pointing out that the yearly event has further showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Onna and the state at large.
She appreciated the governor and wife for giving women the chance to serve and as well solicited for outright support and loyalty from the women to the government.
Earlier in her remarks, the initiator of the event, Akwa Obongawan Patience Udo Ukpa said the celebration birthed in 2008 is aimed at promoting unity and togetherness among Onna women.
She noted that the objectives have so far been achieved and called for support from well spirited individual to make the it bigger in years ahead.
The monarch's wife appreciated the governor's wife, Mrs Martha Emmanuel for her motherly and supportive role in making this year's celebration unique describing her as a 'noble and worthy' daughter of Onna.
In her address , the chairperson of the occasion, Mrs. Idoreyin Uduyok noted with pleasure the achievements of the celebration over the years, positing that it has impacted positively on the lives of Onna women. She paid glowing tributes to the First Lady for her love and support for the women across the state and prayed God to bless her efforts.
The event which featured dancing competition, songs renditions, march pass as well as sack race competition saw prices and cash gifts given to deserving winners.
