Plans are underway by students of Uyo City Polytechnic,
Nduetong Oku, to demonstrate again if the school management fails in clearing
them for the one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The affected students underwent the screening exercise
and are now pained by the institution’s management decision to demand additional
money for their mobilization.
The protest is coming on the heels of previous one which was a reaction to the institution’s management's alleged underhand
tactics which may thwart them from proceeding on NYSC.
During the previous protest, the management called for calm,
promising to rectify the delay.
Also, the students are against the institution’s plan to
release few NYSC forms to few of its students based on their inability to pass
out all the students. The said attempt failed woefully when the students
demonstrated their anger.
A source who confided on this reporter on condition of
anonymity disclosed that the reason the school is imposing additional levies on
the graduating students is because of the huge debt which the school is owing
her affiliated institution, Heritage Polytechnic, Eket.
One of the aggrieved students who spoke to this reporter
vowed never to pay the extra charges. His words: "This time we will not accept, we will not agree, we are not
taking it kindly anymore. The school management are trying to play with us, so
this time we are going to show them that they are not that wise. If they have
problems with another school they are affiliated to, maybe they have issues
with the NYSC or whoever, they should go and sort out. They have collected so much from us so far, so they should stop all
this, isn't fare at all, is not nice seriously."
Meanwhile, efforts to speak with the school management
proved abortive before press time.
