Akwa United Football Club of Uyo have laid off nine players that were part of team in the 2015/2016 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League in order to begin preparation for the new season.
The players affected include, goal keepers: Victor Obiowo, Bassey Akpan.
Others are Nnamso Edo, Kufre Ebong, Alhassan Dosso, Ukeme Davies, Ini Akpan, Aniekan Ekpe and Azeez Awakan.
According to the chairman of the club, Paul Bassey who also confirmed that goal keeper trainer, Mike Ekpenyong, was also relieved of his duties, noted that the process is ongoing to ensure that the state team assemble a strong squad ahead of the new season.
The 2015 Federation Cup champions finished the season on the 14th position after garnering 47 points from 36 games.
Meanwhile, several coaches have been linked to the Promise Keepers including, Paul Aigbogun of Enyimba and former coach of Wikki Tourists, Abdul Maikaba to take over from Maurice Cooreman whose contract is yet to expire with the Uyo-based side.
